Angry Birds named most downloaded paid app of 2011

Rovio's Angry Birds has been named the most downloaded paid app for the smartphones and tablets in 2011. According to research firm Distimo, Angry Birds was downloaded more than any other application across all major operating systems including Android, iOS, Windows Phone and others. The only platform missing out on the list is BlackBerry. However, the game was recently made available on the BlackBerry's App World.

Garden of Time named top game on Facebook, ahead of CityVille

Social gaming was one of the big Internet trends this year. Social networking giant Facebook has been a destination for casual gaming for a long time, perhaps one of the major factors behind massive popularity of the site. Facebook has released its list of the most popular games for the year 2011. In what may come as a surprise for many, Playdom's Gardens of Time has been named as the most popular game on the social networking site. Disney-owned Garden of Times has toppled Zynga's Cityville for the top spot.

AMD Radeon HD 7970 Series GPU officially announced

This week the AMD Radeon HD 7970 series graphics processor series has been released (for $549 on January 9th, if you’d like to know,) and its codename family “Southern Islands” has been detailed in full to show the world what the company has planned for GPU power throughout the next few years, starting right here at the next: 2012. In a set of affirmations by the group that’s about to unleash their newest set of GPU units on the world of gaming, AMD said that PC gaming software sales on the whole were over $15 billion USD in 2011 and are estimated to blow past $20 billion inside 2012. Because of this, and because AMD loves its gaming following out there in gameland, they’ve also re-affirmed their dedication to their “Gamers Come First” credo, as well as their Gamers Manifesto which says, quite simply: Enablement, Not Disablement.

AMD: We Are Shipping Our 28nm GPUs Now

Advanced Micro Devices said on Tuesday that it had begun to ship its next-generation graphics processing units (GPUs) made using 28nm fabrication process at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's fabs for revenue. The company is projected to formally unveil its future graphics products at the Consumer Electronics Show early in 2012.
